A 360° view on the top of Aurignac’s Donjon

Within this village full of history, we invite you to gain some height. Climb up the steps and come to this 400m spur, allows to contemplate the surroundings Pyrenean piedmont plain. In the background discover the unobstructed view on the Pyrenees range.
Great monument of this medieval city, 70km away South-West of Toulouse, the Earl’s Castle and its Donjon, built on a rocky outcrop, towers over plains and hills. We can reach this uncovered whatover with a stair and the original gate. This impressive structure, stlightly conical, rise up to 18 metres on a 9.25 metres diameter at the bottom, to 8.25 at the top. The Donjon has 3 overlaid rooms of 5 metres high and 3.4 meters wide each. We can contemplate the splendid panoramic view on the Pyrenees range and get your bearings thanks to the viewpoint indicator.

The summits you can catch the sight of

From the hills, you will catch sight of the Pyrenees summits, including some symbolic ones in the Comminges like the Pic du Cagire (1,912m) or the Pic du Gar (1,785m).
You will probably be able to catch the sight of a numberous 3000m summits from the Luchon area (Pic de Perdiguère, Crabioules, Maupas, Spijeoles …). With 35 peaks over 3,000m high, the Luchon area mountains contain the greatest « 3,000m » gathering of all Pyrenees.
Snow-capped all year long, you will catch sight of the Pic d’Aneto which is the top of the Pyrenees range with a 3,404 m altitude. It is located in Spain, North-East of the Aragon and the Huesca province. To go further in the discovery in this charming village.
The history of this village does not begin in Middle-Ages. Aurignac, it’s 35,000 years of history. Indeed, Aurignac benefits from an international renown thanks to the discovery of prehistoric items in a cave. This discovery has made Aurignac an eponymous place of the Upper Paleolithic : « l’Aurignacien ». A museum dedicated to this discovery and this time period awaits you: le musée de l’Aurignacien. Carry on the visit by taking the laerning path that will lead you to the cave.

Close car parks
Place de la Mairie in lower town, then walk in the streets of the medieval city until the Earl’s Castle.
A few parking places Place de Madrid just near the courtyard of the Earl’s Castle (better for people with reduced mobility) and Rue de l’Allée next to the old village hall. Walking time from Place de la Mairie to the Donjon: about 10 minutes (steep way).
